The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is pushing manufacturers toward higher quality and lower environmental impact through the ZED Certification Scheme, short for Zero Defect, Zero Effect. The idea is to help MSMEs make better products, run more efficiently, cut their environmental footprint, and become more competitive both at home and abroad.
Women entrepreneurs get an extra push here. Since 11 November 2023, eligible women-owned MSMEs can get ZED Certification completely free, with the government covering 100% of the cost. That removes one of the bigger barriers to adopting recognized quality and sustainability standards.
What ZED certification actually involves
The ZED framework is built around three tiers, Bronze, Silver and Gold, giving businesses a clear path to keep improving their technology, production systems and manufacturing practices over time.
Beyond the certification itself, there’s financial help attached. Eligible MSMEs can claim up to 75% of testing and certification costs (capped at ₹50,000), up to ₹2 lakh for consultancy and handholding support, and up to ₹3 lakh toward pollution control measures and cleaner technology adoption.
Uptake has been substantial
By 7 July 2026, roughly 9.49 lakh MSMEs had signed up for the scheme. Of those, over 6.67 lakh have earned Bronze certification, 6,700 have reached Silver, and 4,800 have hit Gold. The government has handed out more than ₹913 crore in financial assistance to support this shift toward quality and sustainability.
The scheme has picked up backing beyond the Ministry too. Twenty-two States and Union Territories now build ZED into their own industrial policies, offering certified MSMEs extra incentives on top of what’s available nationally. Nineteen financial institutions have joined in as well, offering perks like lower processing fees and better interest rates to certified businesses, making it easier for them to access credit.
What it looks like on the ground
Two examples show how this plays out in practice. Finex Industries Pvt. Ltd. in Dindori, Nashik, earned ZED Silver Certification on 14 July 2025. Afterward, the company cut its Cost of Poor Quality by 11%, reduced rework by 10%, and brought defects down by 1%. It also saw gains in workplace safety, resource use, energy efficiency and space management, resulting in higher productivity and better product quality overall.
Concept Clothing Pvt. Ltd. in Jalandhar, Punjab, tells a similar story. It received ZED Silver Certification on 14 June 2025, and the results followed quickly: workplace incidents dropped 80%, Mean Time to Repair fell 50%, rework dropped 7.4%, and product rejection fell 4%. The company also reported meaningful cost savings from better quality control, environmental management and workplace practices. Management credited the certification with tightening operational discipline and sharpening the company’s overall competitiveness.
