Indian Railways Kavach Safety System – ₹206 Crore Northern Railway Deployment

Indian Railways has given the green light to roll out Kavach Version 4.0, the country’s homegrown Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across 680 route kilometres of the Northern Railway network. The estimated cost comes to ₹206 crore. 

The project covers the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections, along with feeder branch lines under the Delhi Division of Northern Railway. It’s another step forward in the nationwide push to expand this indigenous safety system, and a fairly significant one given how busy these corridors are. 

What is Kavach? 

Kavach is an indigenously developed ATP system built to catch the kinds of accidents that happen because of human error or signalling violations. It watches train movements continuously and steps in automatically the moment conditions turn unsafe.
