Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026 got underway on July 14 with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagging off the ‘Shaurya Vijay Yatra’, a 13-day commemorative motorcycle expedition, from the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The riders’ destination: the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. He described the Indian soldiers of 1999 as having written a chapter of courage, patience, discipline and patriotism so remarkable that militaries around the world still study it with respect. “At an altitude of nearly 20,000 feet and temperatures plummeting to minus 40 degrees celsius, our soldiers achieved their objectives with courage and resilience. They reclaimed every peak, hill & bunker from enemy control and upheld the honour of the Tricolour. The victory represents India’s enduring resolve to respond with full might to any hostile gaze upon our land, identity and honour,” he said.
He singled out four Param Vir Chakra awardees by name for their role in the victory: Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd), and Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Sanjay Kumar (Retd). Singh said these soldiers continue to inspire India’s youth and will keep doing so for generations to come.

Along the way, the riders will stop to pay respects at several major military memorials, including Chandimandir War Memorial, Rezang La War Memorial and Leh War Memorial. Singh also pointed to who’s actually taking part as one of the expedition’s defining features, a mix of serving officers, veterans and civilians from across the country. “Diverse backgrounds, languages, and traditions, yet one Tricolour, one Nation, and a shared reverence for our heroes – this is the very identity of our country,” he said.
National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets were present at the flag-off, and Singh said he expects the expedition to stir fresh patriotism, particularly among young people. He framed it as a message to future generations: defending the nation’s freedom and honour isn’t confined to the borders, it also lives on in memory and values.

Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani and Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth were among the senior officials present at the event.
