Mizoram’s NHM Designated Repository: An Astonishing Milestone

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has designated the Natural History Museum (NHM) at Mizoram University, Aizawl, as a Designated Repository under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. Acting on a recommendation from the National Biodiversity Authority and after examining the proposal, the Central Government notified the institution on 19 June 2026. That makes NHM India’s 21st Designated Repository, adding to the country’s biodiversity conservation and scientific infrastructure.

Designated Repositories play a key part in India’s biodiversity governance, since they’re responsible for preserving authenticated biological specimens accessed under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

What the Museum Will Hold

NHM will maintain voucher specimens covering select flora, including pteridophytes and macrofungi, along with fauna such as reptiles, amphibians, fishes, moths, beetles, and butterflies. It will also act as the designated depository for type specimens of newly discovered species from the region. These authenticated collections will help with species identification and traceability, support scientific research, and protect India’s biological resources for the long term. They’ll also come in useful for ecological restoration down the line, if habitat loss, natural disasters, or species decline ever call for it.

Why This Location Matters

The NHM was set up in 2022 under Mizoram University, a Central University established by an Act of Parliament, and its location gives it a genuine edge: it sits within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and brings specialised taxonomic expertise to the table. Mizoram and the wider Northeast are home to more than 7,500 species of flowering plants and over 2,000 faunal species. The museum’s focus on pteridophytes, macrofungi, moths, beetles, and other lesser-studied groups fills a real gap in India’s network of Designated Repositories and adds depth to the scientific record of the region’s biodiversity.

Protecting Species Found Nowhere Else

The repository will also help document and conserve species endemic to the region, including the recently described amphibian Leptobrachella tamdil, found in Mizoram’s forests. That discovery alone says a lot about the Northeast’s standing as a global centre for biodiversity and species discovery.

Already Building a Collection

Even before this designation came through, NHM had shown it was scientifically ready for the role, having already collected and preserved more than 500 specimens, including herbarium sheets and wet-preserved collections. Its scientific team draws on experts from Mizoram University across seven specialised taxonomic groups, spanning everything from macrofungi and pteridophytes to fishes, moths, and butterflies.

Strengthening the National Network

This designation adds to India’s national network of Designated Repositories in a practical way: specimens can now be preserved closer to where they’re actually found, documentation improves, logistical hurdles shrink, and collaboration with the Mizoram State Biodiversity Board and regional research institutions gets easier.

Alongside the existing repositories run by the Botanical Survey of India, the Zoological Survey of India, and other notified institutions, this designation supports National Biodiversity Target 4 under India’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2024-2030), strengthening ex situ conservation and the conservation of genetic diversity, in step with Target 4 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
